Workshop (GA)

An Assistant Workshop Technician is regarded as someone who can assist in the 'first line' fault finding on equipment and undertake routine maintenance. In many cases, the Assistant Workshop Technician will be required to assist the Workshop Technician in more complex technical activities such as component level fault finding, system set-up and calibration.

In practise there is some overlap between Assistant Workshop Technician and the Workshop Technician grades. It is not the intention of this programme to limit the technical activities undertaken by a Assistant Workshop Technician when they are clearly capable of undertaking some of the responsibilities of the Workshop Technician grade, with the consent of the Senior Workshop Technician or Workshop Manager.

A Senior Workshop Technician is generally regarded as someone who can direct and lead personnel in order to achieve the outcomes of the work scope.

Due to the relatively small size of the team the Senior Workshop Technician must also be hands on and capable of carrying out maintenance and operation tasks as required. It is for this reason that operational experience forms an important part of the criteria for this grade.

The Senior Workshop Technician is expected to coach colleagues in all aspects of workshop activities and maintenance. To this end, formal assessment qualifications are often required, and their ability to assess personnel is assessed in line with IMCA guidelines.

In practice there is some overlap between Senior Workshop Technician and Workshop Manager. It is not the intention of this programme to limit the technical activities undertaken by a Senior Workshop Technician when they are clearly capable of undertaking some of the responsibilities of the Workshop Manager grade, at the discretion of the Workshop Manager and/or employer.

A Workshop Manager is regarded as someone who can manage the workshop team in order to achieve outcomes as required by the organisation.

The Workshop Manager must also be proficient in most aspects of management and this is therefore assessed within this grade as an ongoing competence.

The Workshop Manager is expected to coach and assess colleagues in all aspects of operations and maintenance. Workshop Managers may apply for formal assessment qualifications which are awarded by the awarding body EAL. They are however assessed on their assessment skills within this grade in line with IMCA requirements where applicable.

The following competences are considered to be essential within all supervisory roles. They therefore form the ongoing competences that must be repeated by personnel who wish to remain in the most senior role for workshop personnel involved in onshore operations.

A Workshop Technician is regarded as someone who can fault find on equipment but also plan and to some degree manage technical activities. In many cases the Workshop Technician will be required to assist the Senior Workshop Technician on some managerial activities.

The Workshop Technician is expected to coach colleagues in all aspects of operations and maintenance.
